Second Round

Since safety happens to be the Lions’ biggest need heading into the draft, one would think that they would try to address it early. While the could hope that Derwin James out of Florida State falls to them at No. 20, they might just wait a round and take Marcus Allen at No. 51 out of Penn State.

Allen is 6-foot-2, 215 pounds. He has 30 5/8 inch arms and 9 1/8 inch hands. While he did not run the 40-yard dash at the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Allen showed that he had some range with 37 inches in the vertical and 127 inches in the broad jump. He did have a 4.32 time in the 20-yard shuttle.

Allen played all four years at Penn State split between the Bill O’Brien and James Franklin eras in State College. He recorded 320 total tackles (181 solo, 139 assists), 17.0 for a loss of yardage, 10 pass breakups, five forced fumbles, 3.0 quarterback sacks, two fumble recoveries and an interception.

Allen may not have the best ball skills at safety, but the guy can sure hit. He has a knack for forcing the ball loose on his tackles. Having a guy that is willing to play up in the box and dish out the punishing hit could be a huge gain for the Lions defense here in the second round.
