2018 NBA Mock Draft: Time for the Final Four
I think we will look back on Williams’ college career as one case study within the occasionally disastrous circumstances of returning to school as a draft prospect, but I still don’t imagine he falls much further than this, where the Suns have two picks and a need for bigs.
Aggies coach Billy Kennedy did nothing to change his offense to suit Williams’ skill set despite his talented big man’s decision to come back. The team was still overly reliant on junior Tyler Davis’ scoring from the center spot, meaning Williams rarely played as the only big on the floor. Not only is that the best use of his talent, but if his goal in returning was to improve and compete for Texas A&M, playing center would have accomplished both.
Not only did Williams see no development of his jumper, but he did little to answer the questions surrounding his attentiveness and motor. The sophomore is a pre-packaged modern 5 in the mold of Clint Capela. He feels the game well, which may be the one thing an extra college season brought out.
In Phoenix, Williams would provide the first dose of stability in Phoenix’s frontcourt in quite a while, and take a step toward shoring up their miserable interior defense.
