4 X factors who could push their team to NHL playoffs (Eastern Conference)
Columbus Blue Jackets X factor: Seth Jones
Often flying under the radar compared to fellow Blue Jackets, Seth Jones has been a catalyst for Columbus’ recent strong play.
Jones has been a force to be reckoned with on the back end this season. His dynamic play has helped him begin to emerge as a superstar defender in this league. Through the 11 games Jones played in the month of March, he has registered six goals, four assists, a plus-minus of plus-8 and averages a team-high 22.18 minutes of ice per game.
Anchoring the top defensive pairing alongside Zach Werenski, Jones has also split time on both the first and second power play unit and spent time killing penalties. His recent offensive play has helped a Blue Jackets power play that used to sit dead last in the league. He has a shooting percentage of just over 18 percent this month.
Jones has been everything coach John Torterella could ask of him of late — a minute-munching defenseman who can contribute both offensively and defensively. Jones’ solid defensive play reflects the Blue Jackets’ ranking of No. 9 in the NHL in goals against per game.
Watch two way beast Jones quietly emerge as the Blue Jackets’ X factor as Columbus fights for the best seed possible come the playoffs in April.
