Following the international break, the Bundesliga season resumes with the biggest game of the season, Der Klassiker. Bayern Munich host Borussia Dortmund at the Allianz Arena looking to clinch a record sixth straight league title with a win and Schalke dropping points. Dortmund are third, one point behind Schalke but only five points ahead of sixth place RB Leipzig.
Bayern are 17 points ahead of Schalke in the table but lost 2-1 to Leipzig in their last game. The loss ended Bayern’s 13 game unbeaten streak that saw them win 12 games. At home this season, Bayern have won 11 of 13 games, picking up 35 of 39 points. Bayern’s home success can be attributed to Robert Lewandowski, who has been virtually unstoppable at home. Lewandowski has scored 17 goals and in 12 of the club’s 13 games at the Allianz Arena. In comparison, Nils Petersen in second in the Bundesliga in scoring with 13 goals in 25 games this season. Bayern could be without Jerome Boateng who limped off in Germany’s game against Brazil on Tuesday. If Boateng is unable to play, Niklas Sule will start next to Mats Hummels.
Since Peter Stoger took over as manager, Dortmund have gone unbeaten in 12 straight games, picking up 26 points. Saturday’s game against Bayern will be the biggest test for Stoger this season and a win could help him earn a contract extension for next season. However, winning will not be easy for Dortmund, who might be without Marco Reus, after he suffered a groin injury in Europa League. Reus was one of four Dortmund players who was not called up during the international break by German manager Joachim Low. Mario Gotze, Andre Schurrle, and Julian Weigl will all be looking to prove to Low that they deserve a spot in the squad heading to Russia. Schurrle has played significantly better since Stoger took over and will likely start next to Michy Batshuayi and Christian Pulisic in the front three.
