Here’s why El Trafico is a fantastic name for the newest MLS rivalry out West
Heading into the first meeting between LAFC and the LA Galaxy, a lot of debate took place over what the rivalry should be dubbed. Of course, typical names like the Los Angeles derby or Hollywood derby had been thrown around. However, it seems as if El Trafico has won the vote of many. While the nickname has gotten a lot of heat on social media, it’s here to stay. Here is why El Trafico is the perfect name for the rivalry.
First and foremost, it’s realistic. The traffic in Los Angeles is unimaginable and one of the most notable things about the city. The traffic is about as crazy as the first match between the two, which is another reason the namesake is realistic. LAFC blowing a 3-0 lead and Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring a stoppage time winner is as unreal as LA traffic following the 2017 World Series. Neither club is located close to Hollywood, which seemingly rules out the most unique facet of Los Angeles. Not to mention, the Hispanic culture is deeply rooted into the history of California, something the name El Trafico embodies perfectly.
Further, the title is unique. Yes, it’s strikingly similar to Real Madrid vs. Barcelona in El Classico. However, it’s also completely different. El Trafico — much like America itself — attempts to put a unique spin on the classic interpretation of the game of soccer. The LA rivalry doesn’t take on the namesake of its city followed by ‘derby’. Therefore, the name El Trafico gives the game a title in which nobody else boasts.

El Trafico is still relatively new. It’s a fresh idea and it’ll likely take some time to grow on people. But, due to the incredible diversity and historical significance of Los Angeles, there are plenty of options for a rivalry nickname. While many have shown their displeasure with El Trafico, people would be hard-pressed to find a more clever title. However, it’s certainly possible.
