Jim Nantz is one of the greatest broadcasters of all-time but was taken down by one of the most commonly used words in the world.

We’ve all had this conversation with someone in our lives: How do you pronounce GIF?

There’s only one right way to say it — GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format — so there’s not a whole lot of wiggle room. There is, however, wiggle room with other words that certain people pronounce one way and others another. It’s why some people think there’s more than one way to say GIF when there isn’t.

Before Saturday night, we all assumed there was only one way to say “meme”.  Jim Nantz is petitioning for it to be placed in the multiple pronunciations category.

When making fun of Grant Hill for his viral reaction to almost getting murdered during the Michigan-Loyola game, Nantz butchered one of the most commonly used words in the world.

Fun story: My boss came out of his office one day, completely unprompted, and asked the office if we had watched the new Adidas commercial. Maybe it wasn’t a commercial, that wasn’t the point. The point is he pronounced it “Ah-deed-ahs”, assisting himself in an alley-oop in order to school us on how the word is actually pronounced.

We all thought he was crazy, but apparently, he’s not wrong (so he says).

The point is, maybe we’re all saying “meme” wrong and it’s Nantz who has actually latched onto the proper pronunciation of the word.

He’s wrong, but to say Nantz is wrong would be to say my boss is wrong. One is perhaps the greatest broadcaster of our generation, the other keeps me gainfully employed. Therefore, starting tonight there is now more than one way to say the word “meme”, and no one will judge you if you want to take a word we all say one way and fabricate another pronunciation for it.
