Napoli’s quest for the scudetto takes on an extra layer of urgency on Saturday when they play on the road against Sassuolo. Just two points behind first-place Juventus going into this weekend, Napoli need to grab all three points if they hope to keep pace with the defending league champions.

The pre-Easter slate of matches, including Juventus hosting AC Milan, could very well allow Napoli to jump back into first. It could also result in Napoli laying an egg. With eight games left to play in the season, every point counts as the season-long battle for the title between the Partenopei and Bianconeri reaches its spring climax.

Napoli’s chain-smoking manager Maurizio Sarri, who some have argued would be a great replacement for Antonio Conte at Chelsea next season, is trying to lead his scrappy side to their first title since 1990 when the team featured Argentine superstar Diego Maradona. Juventus, winners of the last six straight league titles, remain the favorite to win it again.

Nonetheless, don’t rule out a Napoli surge down the stretch. Sarri’s tactics have molded a team that features some of the most underrated players in Europe, including Italian winger Lorenzo Insigne and Belgian striker Dries Mertens. These players, not big in stature, have thrived under Sarri’s possession-style and attacking brand of soccer. Mertens is the team’s top scorer this season with 21 goals in all competitions.

“My wonderful performances with the [Napoli] shirt are the result of a team that continues to grow together,” Mertens said in an interview with Dugout.com. “The manager is working well, we have played together as a team for a few years now and that has helped me to play well. I also changed position: I used to play on the left, now I play upfront and in more games.”

Against 15th-place Sassuolo, the Partenopei will employ their typical 4-3-3 formation that morphs into a 3-5-2. Sarri should have a full squad at his disposal following the international window, with the exception of captain Marek Hamsik. The Slovakian midfielder is still recovering after recently having his tonsils removed. The 30-year-old had suffered from tonsillitis since January.

Sassuolo won’t be easy to break down. Another loss for the Neroverdi could plunge Giuseppe Iachini’s side into the drop zone. Also desperate for points, Sassuolo promise to be no pushovers. Nonetheless, Napoli defeated the Sardinia-based club 3-1 on matchday 11, an early sign of their dominance over other teams this season.
