WrestleMania XXIV

Actual main event: Edge vs. The Undertaker

What the main event should have been: Edge vs. The Undertaker

So The Undertaker wasn’t given the final match of the night the year before, even after winning the Royal Rumble, and it was decided that he would battle Edge for the World Heavyweight Championship in the final match of the night in Orlando and it was the right move.

Yes, there were other options on at night at the Citrus Bowl. In the other world title match of the night (that’s right, I refuse to acknowledge that travesty of a ECW Championship, especially when that match literally lasted 11 seconds), Randy Orton defended the WWE Championship against John Cena and Triple H. But again, I like the one-on-one affair at the end of the night, so I’m glad they kept this away from the end of the night. Then you had the emotional retirement match featuring Ric Flair against Shawn Michaels. However, with no title on the line, it was perfect where it was.

Edge had really come into his own and had become one of the best heels in the business, and while a program with The Undertaker didn’t seem like an ideal fit, the two ended up having the best feud of the year in 2008, and this match was extremely entertaining. For nearly 25 minutes, the two went back and forth, and for a while, it actually seemed like Edge could actually break the undefeated streak. However, The Phenom was able to pick up WrestleMania win number 16 and win the Big Gold Belt.
