WrestleMania XXVII

Actual main event: John Cena vs. The Miz

What the main event should have been: John Cena vs. Randy Orton

If we’re talking about rivals for John Cena, I certainly don’t put The Miz at the top of the list, even if the two have faced off at WrestleMania on two separate occasions, one of which was here at WrestleMania XXVII — which was just essentially a showcase for The Rock, who had returned to WWE to host the event after a long hiatus from the company. He got involved in the main event, cost Cena the title and set up the main event for the following year. Okay, they got their mainstream attention and the dream match but I never liked any of it. More on that in a bit.

If I’m looking Cena rivals, Randy Orton has to be right near the top of the list, and much like I said with Edge, I think it’s unfortunate that these two never got a one-on-one match at WrestleMania. Again, there was a Triple Threat, which featured Triple H at WrestleMania XXIV, but never a singles bout and that’s unfortunate. Orton did have himself a very good match at WrestleMania XXVII with CM Punk, but a world title bout with Cena would have been preferred. Throw The Miz in Orton’s spot there and I still think you get a good match and even better promos leading up to it.

Listen, I know that The Rock was good for business and it was nice to see him back. But just let him cut a promo or two and be done with it. I know they were setting things up for the following year but is it worth sabotaging a WrestleMania main event for a setup, something that could have been done the following Monday night? I think not. Get Orton in there and let him and Cena put on a show.
