Barcelona host Roma in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal at Camp Nou on Wednesday. The Spanish giants are first in La Liga, holding a nine-point lead over Atletico Madrid. Three points third place Roma and their city rival Lazio, who are fifth.
Barcelona advanced to the quarterfinals following a 3-0 win against Chelsea at Camp Nou. However, the Catalan side have not advanced to the semifinals since winning the competition in 2015. Domestically, Barcelona have not lost in La Liga this season but drew with Sevilla in their first game back from the international break. Offensively, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez continue to fill the back of the net. Messi has scored 35 goals and added 16 assists this season, while Suarez 24 goals and 12 assists. With Ousame Dembele returning from injury, the Barcelona attack has become even more difficult to stop as the French international adds additional pace to the front three.
Roma advanced to the quarterfinals after defeated Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 at home, advancing on away goals. Eusebio Di Francesco’s side drew 1-1 with Bologna on Saturday. The draw ended a three-game winning streak for Roma, who had won six of their previous seven games prior to Saturday’s tie. Di Francesco could be without Radja Nainggolan who suffered an injury against Bologna. Nainggolan is arguably Roma’s most important player, who actively attempts to win possession back and creates opportunities moving forward. In addition to potentially being without Nainggolan, Cengiz Under will miss Wednesday game with a hamstring injury and Lorenzo Pellegrini is questionable with a calf injury.
