Liverpool beat Manchester City 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie.

The Reds blitzed City in the first half, taking the lead in only the 12th minute through Mohamed Salah, who finished after several City players failed to clear Roberto Firmino’s shot, which went straight at Ederson.

The away side almost equalized immediately after, however, but Sane dragged his 14th minute shot wide of the goal after running half the length of the pitch toward the Liverpool area. It was a poor finish, but a sign of how devastating City can be on the break.

Liverpool doubled their lead out of nowhere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain powering in a strike from the top of the box. Their similarities with his goal against City earlier in the season, and it proved to have a similar galvanizing effect.

The Reds, who had mostly played on the break before Oxlade-Chamberlain’s goal began to peg City deep in their own half, and added to their lead in the 31st minute, Sadio Mane heading in at the back post after nice cross by Salah.

In the second half, City dominate possession as they have so often this season, as Liverpool seemed happy to drop off and protect their lead. Given they almost let a three-goal lead slip the last time the sides met, it was certainly a risky approach.

They were further hampered by the withdrawal of Salah, who limped off with what appeared to be a groin injury. Roberto Firmino and Mane tried to pick up the slack, but the Reds simply didn’t pose the same threat on the break.
