Atletico Madrid are the favorites to win the Europa League. On Thursday they host Sporting in the first league of the quarterfinals. Atleti are second in La Liga, nine points behind Barcelona. Sporting are third in the Primeira Liga, trailing Benfica by six points with six games remaining.

Atletico Madrid were relegated to Europa League after finishing third in their Champions League group. In their first four Europa League game, Atleti have been dominant, outscoring Copenhagen and Lokomotiv Moscow 13-2. Domestically, Atletico have lost two of their last four games, however, those are the club’s only two losses in 2018. Defensively, Atletico have been incredibly strong during Diego Simeone tenure as manager. However, the club is dealing with multiple injuries at the back. Jose Gimenez, Filipe Luis,  Sime Vrsaljko, and Juanfran could all miss Thursday’s game. The injuries will force Simeone to get creative with his back four and likely play someone out of position. Antoine Griezmann did not play in Atletico’s win against Deportivo de La Coruna on Sunday. The French striker has scored 23 goals and has 13 assists this season and should be fresh against Sporting.

Sporting required extra time to barely squeak past Czech side Viktoria Plzen in the round of 16. Jorge Jesus’ side slipped up in their last league game, falling 1-0 to Braga. Overall, Sporting have won six of their last nine games. Offensively, the Lisbon side are lead by towering Dutch striker Bas Dost, who has scored 30 goals this season. Sporting will rely on Dost to capitalize on any chances inside of the box in hopes of getting an away goal. William Carvalho has attracted the attention of some of the bigger clubs in Europe. The Portuguese international is a workhorse in midfield, attempting to win the ball back for his side.
