Europa League kicks off on Thursday with Lazio hosting Red Bull Salzburg at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico. Lazio are fifth in Serie A, two points behind Inter Milan for the final Champions League spot. Salzburg are first in the Austrian Bundesliga, holding an eight-point lead with eight games remaining.
Lazio advanced to the quarterfinals after winning 2-0 in Ukraine, eliminating Dynamo Kyiv. However, the Rome side has struggled lately in Serie A. Lazio have won only one of their last four games and only three of their last nine games. While Lazio have struggled to win games lately, scoring has never been an issue this season. Simone Inzaghi’s side are first in Serie A with 73 goals. Ciro Immobile scored twice in Lazio’s 6-2 against Benevento last weekend and has 36 goals and nine assists in all competitions this season. The Italian international is having a career year and will be the focal point of the attack.
Red Bull Salzburg shocked a lot of people when they eliminated Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16. winning 2-1 in Germany. The Austrian champions have been dominant this season in all competitions, including an undefeated run in Europe. Marco Rose’s side have only lost one game domestically, losing 1-0 to Sturm Graz on Aug. 27. Israeli striker Munas Dabbur has been incredible in his first full season with the club. Dabbur has scored 23 goals and added seven assists in all competitions. Defensively, Duje Caleta–Car and André Ramalho will start at center-back and attempt to slow down Ciro Immobile. At 21 years old, Caleta-Car is one of the most promising young defenders in Europe and will be playing for Croatia at the World Cup.
