Bubba Watson was sure to at least make birdie at the par-5 second hole on Sunday, but then his eagle putt happened.

The Masters is the one major Bubba Watson has won in his career, with two green jackets (2012 and 2014) on his resume. At -6 through three rounds this year, he trailed third round leader Patrick Reed by eight shots. Still, a top-10 finish is in the cards.

Reaching a par-5 in two is not a challenge for most pro golfers, and No. 2 at Augusta National is no exception. Watson is one of the tour’s longest hitters, so he he reached that second green without incident on Sunday. Staring at an eagle putt, with a good chance at no worse than a birdie with a well-placed lag, Watson had a chance to put an early good mark on his scorecard.

But as happens quite often, Augusta’s greens had another plan in mind for Watson’s aggressive eagle attempt.

Watson took a bold line, an expected strategy with shots to make up on the leaders, which required navigating across the fringe. Even a slight miscalculation, or a mishit of really any kind, would court disaster with the greens as fast as they are at Augusta. And there you have it, a putt that winds up in a bunker.

Watson salvaged a par on the hole, after that bunker putt brought much worse potentially into play. But any hope to make things interesting on Sunday will require taking advantage of the par-5s at Augusta, and Watson missed an opportunity to go to -7 right now as he winds down his first nine.
