2. “Never-say-die” Mentality

The Bruins are the best third period team in the NHL this season. The B’s score more of their goals in the third period (95) than they do in the first (79) or second (87). Opponents goal scoring trends in the opposite direction with the Bruins giving up 74 goals in first periods this season, 68 in the second but only 57 goals against in third periods this season. The Boston Bruins are plus-38 in goals in the third period. For lack of a better word, that is wild.

Boston has countless come-from-behind wins this season. They haven’t been down in a game this year that the players and fans counted them out in. A prime example of this was their win against the Carolina Hurricanes in March. The Bruins were down three goals heading into the third period, when they fired in five unanswered goals to win the game.

If this isn’t enough to convince you that the Bruins are never out of a game, ask any Toronto Maple Leafs fan about counting the Bruins out. This was a different team, sure, but the core players on that team are still with the Bruins today. Bergeron scored the goal that sent the Bruins to overtime of that one and Marchand had the game winner. Enjoy reliving that amazing moment here.

This season, the Bruins are 21-18-6 when the opposing team scores first. They are also 15-8-4 when outshot by their opponents. Patrice Bergeron is a huge part of this success and ability to win games from behind. He sits 12th in the league in third period scoring with 14 goals, despite only playing in 64 games. Look for him to lead this team on a deep playoff run.

Boston is never out of a game, and that is dangerous trait to have come playoff time. They also have one of the top game-winning players in the NHL in Brad Marchand. Marchand has eight game winning goals, five of which came in overtime. He and his linemates are the last reason the Bruins will be victorious this post-season.
