The first leg of this Champions League tie will have been beyond Liverpool’s wildest dreams. A clean sheet against the all-conquering Manchester City, and three goals of their own to defend in this second leg.
In the past 14 years, a home side has won the first leg of a Champions League knock-out tie 3-0 on five occasions. They have all held on to progress to the next round, so Liverpool should be confident going in to this one.
However, the Reds will be wary of the fact they lost 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium earlier in 2017-18. Barcelona also demonstrated last season that it’s possible to recover from a 4-0 first leg defeat, after they came back to knock out PSG.
Liverpool drew 0-0 with Everton on Saturday, while City surprisingly threw away a two goal lead to lose the Manchester derby. Neither match will have too much relevance here, but Jurgen Klopp will have enjoyed seeing United cut through City’s rearguard.
With City having to go for goals galore and Liverpool very capable of scoring on the counter, this should be a fabulously entertaining match.
