The 2020 MLB All-Star game is heading to Los Angeles when the Dodgers play host to the historic mid-season showdown.
Get your sunscreen and ball caps ready — the 2020 MLB All-Star game is heading to Dodger Stadium in Los Angels, CA.
The Los Angeles Times reports that Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred will be at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday to make the official announcement when the Dodgers host the Oakland Athletics.
The last time the historic ballpark hosted the All-Star game was in 1980, just one year before winning the World Series. That time around the National League team (managed by Chuck Tanner) defeated the American League team (managed by Earl Weaver) with a final score of 4-2.
Dodger stadium opened in April 10, 1962 and hold 56,000 fans.
The Dodgers beat out the Chicago Cubs for hosting honors and will follow The Washington Nationals (who host this July), and the Cleveland Indians will host in 2019.
According to the LA Times, “The Los Angeles City Council helped the Dodgers secure the game, by authorizing the city to receive $100,000 from the Dodgers as payment for city services required to host the game. The council motion cited an estimated $89.4 million in economic impact from hosting the game.”
The stadium was in the news recently due to a sewage leak that ended a preseason game between the Dodgers and their cross-town rivals The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The spill has since been cleaned up, but that hasn’t caused fans from wondering if the vintage stadium was the right choice.
The Dodgers nearly won the World Series last season but were slaughtered in Game Seven by the Houston Astros who took home the coveted trophy for the first time in franchise history. The Dodgers have gotten off to a rocky start this season and are already down 3-6 and in fourth place in the National League West.
