Penguins vs. Flyers live stream, Game 1: TV schedule, online and more
By Adam Stocker
The Pittsburgh Penguins host the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 1 of their first-round series. Here’s everything you need to know to watch.
The Pittsburgh Penguins will look to become the first NHL team to win three straight Stanley Cups since the New York Islanders teams of the 1980s. In the first round, the Penguins face in-state rivals the Philadelphia Flyers. Only two points separated the Penguins and Flyers in the standings and their first-round series promises to be a physical battle between two teams that despise each other.
The Penguins’ success is based on their top two centers, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, who combined for 71 goals and 187 points. By having two dominant lines, Pittsburgh does not allow opposing teams to use their top pairing exclusively focusing on one line.
Phil Kessel had a career year this season, scoring 92 points. After two strong playoff performances, Kessel will need to have another strong postseason if the Penguins are going to win a third Stanley Cup. If the Penguins do have a weakness, it has been Matt Murray, who has struggled this season. Despite having two Stanley Cup rings on his resume, Murray posted a poor .907 save percentage.
After missing the playoffs in three of the previous five seasons, the Flyers made the playoffs this season behind the strong play of captain Claude Giroux. In a crowded Hart Trophy race, Giroux is in the conversation after posting 102 points and scoring 34 goals.
However, Philadelphia is haunted by the franchise’s curse on goalies.
Brian Elliott and Petr Mrazek both had poor seasons, posting below average save percentages. Michal Neuvirth only played 22 games this season but was the Flyers best goalie this season.
However, Neuvirth was injured late in the season and his availability for Game 1 is uncertain.
