The Clemson Tigers have been a College Football Playoff staple of late, but what is Dabo Swinney working with heading into their 2018 spring game?
For the third-straight year, the Clemson Tigers and Dabo Swinney found themselves in the College Football Playoff last season. However, this past year ended unlike the previous two trips to the sport’s proverbial Final Four as the Tigers failed to make it to the National Championship Game.
Put simply, this past year’s iteration of Clemson was a far cry from the teams that we’ve seen in the past. There’s no doubt that they had an elite defense. However, with the departure of Deshaun Watson to the 2017 NFL Draft, their offense was left with something to be desired. And it showed in the third installment of their CFP trilogy with Alabama as they simply couldn’t score on the Crimson Tide, falling 24-6.
So, that leads us into the 2018 spring game, with the annual Orange and White affair being played on Saturday, April 14. And really, things don’t look quite as different as many thought they would, largely because the Tigers’ huge crop of underclassmen defensive studs in their front-seven elected to return to school for another year.
That puts the defense in an obviously great position heading into the 2018 season. But again, the issue with the Tigers last season wasn’t that side of the ball. Luckily for Swinney, there could be some reinforcements coming in that regard as well — or at least hopefully so.
