The Tampa Bay Lightning host the New Jersey Devils in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. Here’s everything you need to know to watch.
The Tampa Bay Lightning and New Jersey Devils both missed the playoffs last season. The Lightning cruised to the top seed in the East, winning 54 games, while the Devils used an incredible second half of the season to claim a wild card. Tampa Bay hosts Game 1 on Thursday night inside of the Amalie Arena, one of the loudest rinks in the NHL.
The Lightning failed to make the playoffs last season after captain Steven Stamkos missed 65 games with a knee injury. This season, Stamkos scored 27 goals and 86 points, forming one of the best one-two punches in the NHL with Nikita Kucherov. The Russian winger emerged as one of the most dynamic offensive threats in the league, scoring 39 goals and adding 61 assists.
The Devils had not made the playoff since losing the Stanley Cup Final to Los Angeles in 2012. In the second half of the season, Taylor Hall put the Devils on his back and carried them to the playoffs. Hall scored 39 goals and 93 points this season.
Rookie Nico Hischier was second on the Devils with 52 points, but will have to provide New Jersey will secondary scoring they are going to advance. If the Devils do not find secondary scoring options behind Hall, Lightning coach Jon Cooper will match Hall’s line against his top defenseman Victor Hedman and try to shut down Hall.

The Lightning will have a sizeable edge in goal this series with Andrei Vasilevskiy. New Jersey head coach John Hynes split playing time between Cory Schneider and Keith Kinkaid evenly. However, both goalies provided the Devils with average play in net. If either goalie struggles, expect Hynes to have a quick hook.
