The Oklahoma Sooners head into their 2018 spring game without Baker Mayfield, but with expectations to return to the College Football Playoff.
Lincoln Riley came into last year readying for his first season as head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners. There were rightfully questions about what that would mean for the program and how much success there would be in Norman for 2017. As it turned out, Riley was ready to answer those questions.
With 2017 Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield leading the way, Oklahoma put forth a truly marvelous season. They won the Big 12, made it into the College Football Playoff and then gave the Georgia Bulldogs quite literally all they could handle in their semifinal matchup of the CFP. And while the Sooners fell short of the title game, they were clearly for real.
But now this is a different time and different team in Norman heading into their 2018 spring game on Saturday, April 14. Riley has made sure that’s clear in regards to the former, making a notable change to the format of the spring game. In years past, Oklahoma has rotated rosters throughout the spring contest, getting different looks on the field. This year, however, the rosters will be set for a straight-up matchup.
In said matchup, there will be plenty to see. From the loss of Mayfield, to other losses, to the follow-up campaign for Riley at the helm of this team, fans of the Sooners and college football alike will be looking to see if Oklahoma can replicate last year’s success in the 2018 season.
