3. The ā€œI Just Want a Canadian Team to Winā€ Guy (in Canada)

I don’t understand this person. Their team is out, or didn’t make the playoffs, so they cheer for whichever Canadian team is still in it so that the ā€œCup comes back to Canada.ā€

I am all-in on my team. If my team is out, I hope no one wins. I hope there is some type of heat wave that prevents the ice from staying frozen and the finals can’t take place. I hope the winning team gets busted for cheating and they asterisk the championship. I hope for a doping scandal that involves every team but my own.

The Cup has spent plenty of time in Canada. Most of which, unfortunately, was in Montreal. Is this what you want? Cheering for a Canadian team for no other reason than their location is a dangerous road to travel down. The ultimate ā€œwatch what you wish forā€ situation would be the Habs winning another Stanley Cup. If the number ever increases from 24 we’re all going to suffer more years of senseless babble about how great they are.

Notice how quiet Canadiens fans are lately, and how nice that is for the rest of us? The Oilers, Leafs, Canucks, Jets and Flames have all had good years. Let them get a taste from time to time, but we’re dangerously close to willing a Canadiens championship and that is bad for everyone.

Don’t cheer for whichever Canadian team is the last one left in the playoffs this year (it’ll be the Jets). Instead, spend all your time reading articles about why/how your team didn’t win. Fuel the fire. They will need you to make a run next year.
