. G. Miami. Lonnie Walker IV. 19. player. 86

The Sun Sentinel in Miami reported after Walker’s draft declaration that Walker is “believed to be the first Hurricane to enter the draft after playing just one year of college basketball.” His legacy, apart from some fun clutch moments, won’t amount to much, as Walker now embarks on a journey toward a style of play that better suits his strengths.

In the same piece, the Sun Sentinel quotes Miami coach Jim Larranaga about Walker’s impact. Larranaga: “With Lonnie leaving, we need a high-octane scorer. Lonnie made a lot of big shots, game-winning shots, game-tying shots, so we’ll keep our eyes and ears open for a player we think can kind of jump in there and fill that role.”

That’s high praise from a college coach that has seen lots of talent come through his program. What’s funny is that Larranaga thinks simply keeping his eyes open will get him a player with the same flair for the big time as Walker. The freshman, on the other hand, is praying that flair follows him to the NBA.

The NBA is more of a one-on-one game, meaning Walker’s most unique strength, pull-up shooting will win more battles individually than he is used to. On defense, his long arms and strong frame will allow him to compete more often against his man than in college. Minnesota loves shot creators and defensive dogs, making the match quite perfect.
