The 30 best players in World Cup history
By James Dudko
28. Thomas Muller, Germany
It’s a strange scenario when a trophy winner who has shone in two tournaments is often overlooked when considering history’s best World Cup players.
Thomas Muller finally got his hands on the cup at the second attempt in 2014, after inspiring Germany in Brazil. The forward scored five times, including the opener to kickstart the unforgettable 7-1 annihilation of the hosts at the semifinal stage.
Muller had already proved his worth at this level back in 2010. He scored five times to win the Golden Boot award as Die Mannschaft lost in the last four to eventual winners Spain.
Deceptive pace and perceptive runs off the ball have defined Muller’s performances for his country. His movement and timing have been perfect for a gifted generation reared to play one- and two-touch passing in rapid transitions.
He seems to have been around forever, but Muller is only 28. This attacking talisman is still good enough to lead Germany to retaining the trophy in Russia.
