The 30 best players in World Cup history
By James Dudko
24. Paolo Maldini, Italy
Paolo Maldini was Mr. Consistency for Italy at four different World Cups. Either as a left-back or central defender, Maldini ensured Italy fielded a defense the envy of almost every other nation.
Maldini was as good for the Azzurri as he was for AC Milan because he had the lot. Pace, anticipation, technique and timing were features of his complete playing style.
He never won the trophy, but Maldini did his best to come close, agonizingly so in most cases.
A defeat on penalties to Argentina in 1990 ruined the party for the hosts at the semifinal stage. Italy lost on spot-kicks again at USA ’94, this time in the final against Brazil.
There was yet more agony for Maldini from 12 yards when Italy were bounced out in ’98. The events of 2002’s exit to South Korea prompted Maldini to call time on his exceptional career representing the Azzurri.
It meant fans were denied the chance to enjoy one of the most accomplished defenders of his or any other generation for a little longer. As if to rub it in, Maldini was a spectator when his country won the trophy in ’06.
