There may not have a better game in the Bundesliga or Europe this season than the revierderby. Borussia Dortmund scored four goals in the first 25 minutes and looked like they were going to cruise to victory over their regional rivals. However, Schalke began chipping away at the lead in the final half hour. The Royal Blues scored four goals in the final half-hour, with Naldo scoring an equalizer in the 94th minute.
On Sunday, the two clubs will meet in Gelsenkirchen for the reverse fixture. Schalke are second in the Bundesliga, one point ahead of Dortmund. However, neither team is guaranteed a Champions League spot as only six points separate Schalke and sixth-place RB Leipzig.
The Royal Blues surprisingly lost to last place Hamburg last week. The loss ended Schalke’s six-game winning streak and allowed Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen to close the gap on them. Offensively, Guido Burgstaller leads the club with 10 goals this season. Since being bought by Schalke in January 2017, Burgstaller has scored 24 goals for the Royal Blues. Burgstaller will lead the front two for Domenic Tedesco as Schalke tries to force Dortmund into defensive mistakes. Defensively, only Bayern have allowed fewer goals than Schalke. Naldo is having a great season for a 35-year-old center-back. The Brazilian has been strong in the middle of the defense and is even second on the team with six goals.
Dortmund bounced back last weekend with a 3-0 win against Stuttgart. Christian Pulisic scored a beautiful goal in the win. Marco Reus returned to the lineup last weekend, and Dortmund are significantly better with him in the lineup, unbeaten in his six Bundesliga games. While Dortmund’s front four of Pulisic, Reus, Maximilian Philipp and Michy Batshuayi can match almost any club in Europe going forward. However, their defense has struggled and is prone to giving the ball away in bad positions.
