There may not be a more heated city rivalry than Lazio vs. Roma. The two clubs are level on points heading into Sunday’s game. Roma are fourth in Serie A, trailing Lazio on goal differential. While Sunday’s game will determine Rome superiority, both teams are looking to stay ahead of Inter Milan. Inter are one point behind both Rome clubs in the race for the final Champions League spot.
Lazio have won four of their last seven games, picking up 14 points. On Thursday, Lazio faced Red Bull Salzburg in the second league of their Europa League quarterfinal. Offensively, Lazio have scored the most goals in Serie A this season. Ciro Immobile leads all players with 27 goals, including seven goals in his last seven games. Immobile’s season has overshadowed Luis Alberto’s season. The former Liverpool man has played behind Immobile, scoring nine goals and adding 13 assists. Defensively, Lazio are middle of the table, allowing 40 goals and keeping only eight clean sheets.
Roma shocked Europe on Tuesday, defeating Barcelona 3-0, coming back from a 4-1 first-leg deficit to advance to the Champions League semifinals. With his side facing a three-goal deficit, Eusebio Di Francesco used a three-man defense for the first time this season. After missing the first leg with a thigh injury, Radja Nainggolan returned and had an impactful game in midfield. Edin Dzeko and Daniele De Rossi both scored a goal and added an assist, while Konstantinos Manolas scored the late winner. Despite rumors that Dzeko would be sold to Chelsea in the winter window, Roma held onto the Bosnia-Herzegovina star. Dzeko has scored 14 goals in Serie A this season, leading all Roma players.
