Who died in The Walking Dead season 8 finale?
The promise of the all-out war coming to an end all but guarantees there would be many casualties in the season 8 finale of The Walking Dead and here’s who met their demise.
Fans of The Walking Dead have done this seven times before so this isn’t anything new for them. The season finale always is a dangerous time because we don’t know which of our favorite characters could be facing the end of their run. Simultaneously, it means some of our most hated characters could be at the end of their time too.
With the all-out war between Rick and Negan promised to come to an end in The Walking Dead season 8 finale, fans are left holding their breath as they ponder the fates of Rick, Negan, Maggie, Dwight and others.
Heading into the episode, I thought Negan and Dwight were the most likely candidates to die. But the more I thought about it, I didn’t think the show would kill off Negan who has pulled off a transformation from the most hated character ever to perhaps the most liked character left on the show. I thought the show killed off Carl so that Negan could live. It goes against my gut, but I envisioned a scenario where Rick would not kill Negan and would rather try to make peace with him which is what Carl wanted.
Even if that happened, there were bound to be some casualties, so let’s take a look at the characters who will not be making it to the season 9 premiere later this fall.
Who dies in The Walking Dead season 8 finale?
A bunch of unnamed Saviors
Negan sent a bunch of his men to slaughter as part of a plan to set up Rick and his people so that Negan can pull off his own trickeration. Negan treats people like a resource so he doesn’t like to do this, but he sees no other way around it. After they shot them dead, King Ezekiel found a map and they discover it was a trap so now they have to change their plan. I figured we’d get some characters that would die that had no emotional attachment. But this is just the start as the war hasn’t even really begun yet.
A bunch more Saviors
Sense a theme? We knew the Saviors wouldn’t win this war. But I don’t think many envisioned a scenario where Eugene would be a big help for Hilltop. He made the bullets and seemingly had become a huge heel in the series. But after testing out the bullets with Negan at the beginning of the episode, he pulled off the greatest sabotage since the Beastie Boys.
Eugene’s bullets backfired on the Saviors who then had their plan of attack backfire against Rick and Hilltop. When they fired their guns, they all went down, including Negan who ran away with his hand all blown up. He survived then but his people weren’t so lucky.
Not Negan
Rick had negan where he wanted him. He fought him off and gave him his plea for peace. He told him how Carl dreamed of a peace between the two. Negan said Carl was wrong, but Rick said he was right. Rick grabbed a shard of glass from a broken mirror and slashed Negan’s throat. It looked like that was going to be it for Negan. Blood gushing from his jugular, but Rick ordered his people to save him. As Maggie whaled from the distance saying he killed Glenn and this can’t be over until he’s dead, Rick preached about how they two sides can build a new world together.
Not Dwight
After Dwight’s double-cross became public knowledge last episode it would have been easy to think Dwight would be dead by the end of this season. That wasn’t the case as Daryl gave him a reprieve. He said if he ever sees him again, he’ll kill him, but he’s letting him go so he can find her, his wife Cheryl, who has been MIA, but he’s on a new path now, and we may have seen the last of Dwight for now.
