5 best Premier League title winners ever: Where do Manchester City rank?
3. Chelsea 2004-05
We’re up among the big boys now, with Jose Mourinho’s first ever Chelsea team taking third place.
Just weeks after winning the Champions League with Porto, Mourinho was poached by Chelsea, announcing he was a “Special One” at his unveiling as Chelsea manager. You could say he backed it up, winning the league with a record points total (95), a record wins total (29), the most clean sheets (25) and the fewest goals conceded (15). It really was a peak Mourinho team.
Though their strength was a back line containing Petr Cech, Ricardo Carvalho and John Terry, and being shielded by Claude Makelele, there was plenty of star talent going forward as well. Frank Lampard was the Player of the Year, racking up the most assists in the league, while the likes of Didier Drogba, Damien Duff and Eidur Gudjohnsen helped the Blues score over 70 goals that season.
However, one can’t avoid the fact the champions failed to beat the defending champions, Arsenal, over the course of the season, the one stat that has them in third place instead of second.
