Second Base, High End Spend

DJ LeMahieu, $3,800

1.000/1.000/1.000 with 0 HR in 1 at-bat

It’s always nice to not pay a premium price for the Rockies when they’re not in Coors Field. The Colorado second baseman draws an exploitable matchup against Buccos starter Steven Brault, who got whacked in his last game out. Even though the Rockies are worse on the road, LeMahieu isn’t the type of player that will hit a ton of home runs anyways. He’s been hitting leadoff when Nolan Arenado has been serving his suspension and that should continue today.

Also Consider – Robinson Cano, $4,200

Mid-Range

Jonathan Villar, $2,600

N/A

It seems like a night that it could be either a high or low approach to the position because the middle road is mediocre, on the surface. One of the spots that could work out nicely is Villar for the Brewers. Opposing starter Luis Castillo has all the talent in the world but hasn’t started the season well. This isn’t a spot I’d pick on heavily because Castillo is a strikeout pitcher against a guy that strikes out a ton. Villar’s upside is always crazy high with steals as well. So far, Castillo is keeping the ball on the ground and the K/9 is down quite a bit. Villar could find his way on base with some well placed ground balls tonight.

Also Consider – Whit Merrifield, $3,100

Value

Kike Hernandez, $2,200

.333/.333/.333 with 0 HR in 3 at-bats

Another very fine value play this evening is lefty specialist Kike Hernandez. Unlike some Padres we like to play against lefties, Hernandez still carries a very low price. His career numbers against lefties include a .265 average, .865 OPS, and a .366 wOBA. Even though he’s gotten off to a very slow start this year, that’s just kept his price low for tonight. As I mentioned earlier, I wouldn’t go nuts with the Dodgers. Hernandez is likely my favorite play on the board from LA due to the potential and the price point.
