Is Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 getting a Battle Royale mode? Recent rumors and indications are stating that it might, which is a smart idea.

Currently, the gaming industry is being dominated by a new genre known as Battle Royale. We’ve seen games such as H1Z1, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, and most recently, Fortnite, lead the pack. This mode has inspired other developers to create their own iteration of it as well, such as the recently released Radical Heights. Now, another popular publisher may be dipping its toes into the genre. If rumors are true, Activision is enlisting Raven Software to develop a Battle Royale mode for Treyarch Studios’ next game, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.

These rumors have been swirling around for quite some time now. Obviously, nothing is official yet, but the speculation is starting to heat up again. It seems Treyarch won’t have enough time to finish a campaign mode for the new game. So the creators are going a different route and shifting their focus to expand the multiplayer and Zombies mode.

This is the statement, courtesy of Polygon:

"The sources, who asked for anonymity, said that as Black Ops 4’s release date approached, it became evident that development on the single-player campaign wouldn’t be completed. One source said Treyarch has since focused Black Ops 4’s development on expanding multiplayer and the series’ popular Zombies mode. The source described an emphasis on cooperative modes as a potential stand-in for the typical single-player campaign experience."

Maybe we’re simply grasping at straws here. However, it would be dumb of Activision not to get in on this while it’s still hot. As mentioned, Battle Royale, especially Fortnite, is extremely popular right now. We’re also more than sure Activision is aware that it can be profitable for the company.

Call of Duty is slowly dying down and it isn’t as popular as it once was. Integrating a mode like this will give it a much needed boost. We should learn more during the official reveal on May 17.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 launches on Oct. 24, 2018.
