Shortstop, High End Spend

Paul DeJong, $3,800

.000/.000/.000 with 0 HR in 1 at-bat

The very high end of shortstop is insanely expensive tonight. Four hitters are $4,000 or higher but the one that stands out is just a shade under that at $3,800. DeJong gets to face Tyler Chatwood, who is a righty. However, he’s not a very good righty and has a high walk rate. DeJong does carry a high strikeout rate but Chatwood just doesn’t scare me at all to this point in his career. I don’t think I’ll be going up to the high end of the position unless something pops up through the day.

Also Consider – Zack Cozart, $4,000

Mid-Range

Jean Segura, $2,800

.200/.200/.333 with 0 HR in 15 at-bats

This price is just far too low for Segura, even if he’s facing a tough challenge against Lance McCullers tonight. The young righty for the Astros hasn’t been in good form so far this year and he got rocked against the Twins his last start. Segura is the 17th(!!) most expensive shortstop tonight but he’s where things get good. McCullers has been hammered by righty bats so far, giving up a .400 average, 1.184 OPS and a .483 wOBA.. He’s always been a reverse splits pitcher. Additionally, Segura has been in the top 50 against the curveball the past 2 full seasons and is on track to be that high again this year. McCullers is throwing the curve 55.2 percent of the time in 2018.

Also Consider – Addison Russell, $3,400

Value

Jedd Gyorko, $2,500

.250/.250/.250 with 0 HR in 4 at-bats

The veteran for the Cardinals comes back off the DL tonight and gets to face Tyler Chatwood, who as we just discussed isn’t all that good. We’ll have to double check to make sure Gyorko is in the lineup tonight but Gyorko has hit right handed pitching pretty well in his career. The low-range of shortstop is pretty mediocre tonight and you could do worse than Gyorko tonight.
