The New England Patriots traded with the Los Angeles Rams to grab pick No. 23, sending wide receiver Brandin Cooks to the left coast. With a big hole at wide receiver, the Patriots could add one with this pick, but we like them to select a player who covers wideouts. In this draft class, Mike Hughes is one of the best cornerbacks, and he should hear his name called in round one.

The Patriots added Jason McCourty to the secondary this offseason, but they need more than just the other McCourty twin to make the unit better in 2018. This secondary was absolutely torched by Nick Foles in Super Bowl LII, as Malcolm Butler watched from the sidelines. Butler left for Tennessee this offseason, so it makes sense that the team would bring in a cornerback in the first round.

Hughes is an incredible athlete, and is one of the better cover guys in this draft class. He is also quite the playmakers, showing an ability to make things happen when the ball is in his hands. New England needs to look at their entire defense heading into next season, and adding McCourty and Hughes to the cornerback group would make the unit a lot better in 2018. With an improved defense, they should be the favorite in the conference heading into the new campaign.
