Xander Bogaerts

The Boston Red Sox are one of the most popular teams in the history of baseball.

The team has eight World Series wins, 12 World Series appearances and a good chance to make a run this season as well.

Naturally, a team like that has early season success, but shortstop Xander Bogaerts took it a bit further, as he pulled out the “take the L” dance from Fortnite after a double on opening day against the Tampa Bay Rays.

While many had no idea what he was doing initially, the internet was on top of it immediately. Twitter exploded as people in baseball and outside of baseball realized what happened.

Unfortunately, it looks like Bogaerts has yet to stream anything publicly, meaning MLB should get him to do a widely marketed stream immediately.

Baseball already has a problem attracting younger viewers, and marketing a historic team like the Red Sox, a talented player like Bogaerts and a popular video game like Fortnite together would be the right move for everyone involved.

Baseball needs to get more eyes on the sport and, more importantly, younger people to become fans. If they could attract a few more Red Sox fans thanks to Bogaerts and Fortnite, then the popularity of both MLB and its players spreads without very much money being expended.

I’m not entirely suggesting that this is true, but “did you see Xander Bogaerts play Fortnite last night” might be the phrase that saves baseball. Do it, MLB. You know you want to.
