Philadelphia Flyers general manager Ron Hextall just announced that the Flyers will be without top center Sean Couturier tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins. So what do they do now?

If the Philadelphia Flyers want to stay alive in this series against the Pittsburgh Penguins and not fall 3-1, they all but have to win tonight in their last game at home before heading back to PPG Paints Arena on Friday.

But that task just became a whole lot more Herculean in nature with the news that top center Sean Couturier, who suffered a lower-body injury in practice Tuesday after colliding with teammate Radko Gudas.

The loss of Couturier shakes up the Flyers’ top line considerably. Coach Dave Hakstol has been tweaking it all season long, opening the year with Claude Giroux, Couturier and Jakub Voracek.

But after finding that the Flyers weren’t getting much production out of their other three lines — and after a ghastly 10-game losing streak — Hakstol shuffled the lines a bit in early December, keeping Giroux and Couturier together on the top line, along with Travis Konecny, and moving Voracek down to the second line.

The Flyers have gone with Giroux, Couturier and Voracek in the postseason, but there’s no question that all the wingers who have played on the top line have been so successful because of one constant: Couturier.

So what happens now? The Flyers’ best option is to move Giroux to center and flank him with Konecny and Voracek.

And who knows? Maybe, once again, it will be a line shakeup that propels the Flyers back to winning territory. Though he had a career-best regular season in goals (34), assists (68) and points (102), Giroux’s production has been nonexistent in the playoffs.

The worry is that Giroux clearly plays better on left wing. He moved there from center in 2017 and, frankly, it saved his career. But at this point, the Flyers don’t really have another option.

Don’t forget, too, that the Penguins are dealing with a major injury of their own. They’ll play without Patric Hornqvist, who has a goal and two assists in the series, Wednesday night.

The two teams will face off at 7 p.m. ET.
