DraftKings Early MLB Picks April 19: Is Morton worth is?

The three game early slate is short on good pitching options, but that also means long on stack options. Thankfully the Cubs and Cards were rained out yesterday, otherwise the pitching options would be really bad!

More from DraftKings

We lost the Cubs-Cards to rain yesterday, but none of the three early games are threatened by rain as of now. The wind is going to be blowing in from right at Wrigley and blowing out to dead center in Detroit at pretty brisk paces.

Yesterday’s slugfest between Oakland and Chicago drove the winning lineups to ridiculous numbers yesterday. It took 126.9 to place in the early slate, and it took a whopping 155.9 to cash in the afternoon slate.

These tips are based mostly on past performance. This is a nice tool for building a lineup, but should not be the only pieces of information you use. Stacking against a bad pitcher is always a good idea!

CHICAGO, IL – APRIL 11: Jon Lester #34 of the Chicago Cubs throws a pitch during the first inning of a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field on April 11, 2018 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by Stacy Revere/Getty Images) /

Top Tier:

Charlie Morton ($11,600): The Mariners are only hitting .242 against Morton with two homers and nine runs in 95 at bats with just 15 strikeouts. Those numbers aren’t great, but there isn’t much here on the early slate. Morton is easily the best option out there.

Jon Lester ($9,200): Lester’s career numbers against the Cardinals aren’t great, but they are good and the wind is blowing in assuming the game is even played. The Cardinals are hitting .245 with six homers and 16 runs in 151 at bats with 37 strikeouts. Those are rather pedestrian numbers, but pitching is pretty weak on the early slate. The conditions in this game are not conducive to big offensive games either.

Middle Tier:

The only pitcher that falls in this tier is Luke Weaver, but Weaver has been blasted by the Cubs. The Cubbies are hitting .458 with three homers and ten RBI in just 24 at bats. It’s hard to ignore stats like that.

Bargain Pitchers:

Alex Cobb ($6,600): Cobb has dominated the current Tigers lineup in his career. They are hitting just .178 against Cobb in 45 at bats with only three runs, but only five strikeouts. If you have played fantasy games for any length of time, you know that Cobb is not a strikeout pitcher. However, Cobb does own a stellar 2.16 ERA in four career starts at Comerica Park. Now the bad news: Cobb was destroyed in his first start with Baltimore.

LOS ANGELES, CA – NOVEMBER 01: Alex Bregman #2 of the Houston Astros celebrates with Yuli Gurriel #10 after scoring a run during the first inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers in game seven of the 2017 World Series at Dodger Stadium on November 1, 2017 in Los Angeles, California. Top Tier:

Kris Bryant is 2-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored in his career against Luke Weaver.

There is a lot of right handed power in the Astros lineup. They are all worth a look against lefty Marco Gonzales. Evan Gattis, Alex Bregman, and Yuli Gurriel, are all affordable if you are willing to go all in on Astros.

Middle Tier:

Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez could be in play against Cobb. I don’t think Cobb is quite right yet. This is still pretty much his spring training. Miggy is 3-15 with five walks, two doubles, and two runs against Cobb. Martinez is 4-13 with a walk, a run, and three RBI. In fact, Martinez is the only current Tiger that has driven in a run against Cobb.

Jose Martinez is 2-5 with two RBI in his career against Jon Lester. Jedd Gyorko is back, and he is 6-19(.316) with two walks and two solo homers in his career against Lester. If Yadier Molina is in the lineup, he is worth a look too. Molina is 12-35(.343) with three walks, three doubles, a homer, a steal, two runs scored, and five RBI off of Lester.

Bargain Shoppers:

It’s Orioles stack day, and the best part is, most of them are cheap! Take Chris Davis for example. Crush is 5-9 with a walk, three homers, four runs, and five RBI in his career against Jordan Zimmerman. Pedro Alvarez is 2-6 with a walk, a homer, and two RBI. Danny Valencia‘s only hit in four at bats against Zimmerman is a home run. If Caleb Joseph starts this afternoon, Joseph is 2-5 with a homer and two RBI.

NEW YORK, NY – APRIL 07: Manny Machado #13 of the Baltimore Orioles follows through on a third inning two run double against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on April 7, 2018 in the Bronx borough of New York City. (Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images) /

Top Tier:

Manny Machado is the most expensive component of an Orioles stack, but he just might be worth it. Machado is 2-7 with a walk, a double, two runs scored, and a RBI.

Robinson Cano is 3-10 with two walks, a double, a run, and a RBI against Charlie Morton. Jean Segura is even cheaper, and he is 8-33(.242) with a double, a homer, two steals, two runs, and three RBI off of Morton.

Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa are always in play with a lefty on the mound. Even though Seattle depresses power, these two don’t just rely on power to get their value.

Middle Tier:

The Cubs have not been kind to Luke Weaver, and their middle infielders are mostly to blame. Addison Russell is 2-3 with a walk, a double, a homer, two runs scored, and five RBI in his career against Weaver. Javier Baez is 2-4 with a homer and three RBI in his career against Weaver. Keep in mind that the wind is blowing in at Wrigley though.

Paul DeJong is only 2-8 against Jon Lester, but he does have a solo homer off of him.

Bargain Shoppers:

Dixon Machado is off to a really good start. You can go with a Machado stack in the middle infield for super cheap. I don’t trust either pitcher at Comerica today.

HOUSTON, TX – APRIL 07: George Springer #4 of the Houston Astros leaps to avoid being hit by the pitch as A.J. Ellis #17 of the San Diego Padres catches the ball in the fifth inning at Minute Maid Park on April 7, 2018 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by Bob Levey/Getty Images) /

Top Tier:

George Springer will set you back quite a bit, but he crushes left handed pitching. He is definitely worth a look against Marco Gonzales.

Middle Tier:

Adam Jones is only 6-22(.273) against Jordan Zimmerman, but he has a walk, three homers, and four RBI against him.

Tommy Pham is only 3-14(.214) against Lester, but he has four walks, a homer, two steals, three runs scored, and two RBI. Marcell Ozuna is 3-8 with a walk, a double, a solo homer, a steal, and two runs scored against Lester.

Bargain Shoppers:

There is potential in the Mariners outfield. Ben Gamel is 2-5 with a homer and two RBI in his career against Charlie Morton. Dee Gordon could be worth a look as well. Gordon is 3-6 with three runs scored and three steals.
