Station 19 recap: Who wins the role of Captain in Stronger Together?

It’s time to take the captain’s test to see who will command Station 19. Discover who takes the lead with our Station 19 recap of “Stronger Together.”

On the day of the captain’s test, Travis commands the station while Jack and Andy are away. Maya is put in charge of Andy’s dad, who appears to be growing sicker each day. Even Miller notices, but Pruitt tells him to mind his own business.

When Jack and Andy arrive at the site, they realize they’re not the only ones trying out for the spot. More importantly, the “legendary” Station 19 holds the only open spot. To run through scenarios, the candidates break up into teams of four. Each team member will get the opportunity to act as captain, and whoever makes it out the fastest wins.

Of course, Jack and Andy end up on the same team. Although their morning started off rocky, they agree that they don’t want Station 19 to fall into anyone else’s hands.

Meanwhile, the rest of Station 19 must dig a young woman, Piper, out of a collapsed pothole. While Victoria and Maya dig, Piper shares that she was on her way to talk to her friend before she got stuck. Earlier that morning, her friend revealed that she was moving across the country, but Piper may even be in love with her.

Maya encourages her to just tell the truth, but she’s too afraid … a feeling Victoria empathized with since she happens to be afraid of fire.

Travis tells Ben and Miller to secure the street in case the whole block collapses. Miller wants to tell Ben about Pruitt’s health just as Ben wants to tell him about Victoria.

On Jack’s turn, the team searches the building, only to find that there’s no dummy inside. He decides to leave the building, where Chief Ripley congratulates him for being the first person in five years to figure it out.

Andy’s turn arrives. This time, when they enter the building, the visibility makes it almost impossible for them to see. Andy commands them to start crawling. Suddenly, the roof collapses, knocking one firefighter out. They call for help and ask for immediate intervention, ending the simulation. However, Andy presses on and finds the dummy anyway. Jack agrees to stay and they manage to rescue the dummy.

Afterward, Andy confronts Frankel for yelling at her. The chief overhears their argument and reprimands them both for not following protocol.

Back at the station, after witnessing Piper’s act of bravery and how it turned out positively for her, Victoria tells everyone about her fears. Though she’s afraid of how they will react and whether she’ll lose her job, she explains that the tanker really traumatized her. She flinched every time she’s near fire and freezes on the spot.

As acting captain, Travis decides that they will keep quiet and keep Victoria in the aid car. For as long as possible, they will help her hide it. On their days off, they agree to take her through the simulations to make her more comfortable.

Jack and Andy drive home together. Jack tries to comfort her, but Andy doesn’t want to talk. Ryan waits for her at home, but she prefers to talk to her father. So, she goes upstairs, but her father is at Grey Sloan instead. He checks himself in again and asks to see Dr. Bailey.
