Third Base, High End Spend

Nolan Arenado, $4,800

.000/.000/.000 with 0 HR in 2 at-bats

The easy money would have been to put Kris Bryant in this spot and he’s a fantastic play. He’s also $500 more expensive and Arenado showed no signs of being rusty last night when he hit a home run. The Rockies third baseman does get the more difficult matchup but Darvish isn’t enough to scare me off either. Darvish has better metrics than his ERA and WHIP would indicate but many pitchers can’t crack Coors Field. Arenado has had a wOBA of over .380 at home against righties for the past three full seasons and is on track to do it again early in 2018. I’m likely to throw at least one GPP with both star third baseman

Also Consider – Kris Bryant, $5,300 and Travis Shaw, $3,900

Mid-Range

Kyle Seager, $3,000

.167/.222/.125 with 0 HR in 24 at-bats

I’m sorry but I’m not on board with the Bartolo Colon throwback tour when he’s a 44 year old pitcher throwing a  MPH fastball. He really struggled with lefty batters in 2017 and that trend is going to continue at some point this year. Seager hasn’t got going yet but he’s putting balls in the air and making hard contact at a good clip. Colon is giving up 45 percent hard contact to lefty hitters and it’s only a matter of time before those balls start leaving the yard. Seager is a perfect mid-range play for tonight.

Also Consider – Adrian Beltre, $3,400

Value

Brian Anderson, $2,600

N/A

It’s a very small sample size to consider, but so far in 2018 Anderson is hammering lefty pitching. It’s only 16 at-bats but the average is up at .400, the OPS is 1.233 and the wOBA is .522. His hard contact rate backs up those numbers at a robust 46.2 percent. Since playing the top two third baseman and an ace pitcher likely isn’t the most realistic thing out there, Anderson is a great way to save some cash and pick one of the studs in the Utility spot.
