Shortstop, High End Spend

Trea Turner, $3,800

.167/.286/.167 with 0 HR in 6 at-bats

Anytime Turney dips under $4,000, it catches my eyes in a big way. Turner wasn’t good against lefties last season but this season has seen a shift in the limited sample size. He’s hit the handedness for a .802 OPS and a .374 wOBA. What’s also interesting is his hard contact rate is through the roof at 60 percent. Hyun-Jin Ryu is giving up hard contact 40 percent of the time so far this season to right handers. We’re not going to get Turner at this price point very often and he could be well worth the spend tonight.

Also Consider – Trevor Story, $3,700

Mid-Range

Addison Russell, $3,400

.333/.333/1.333 with 1 HR in 3 at-bats

The Cubs shortstop is not only in a good spot, he’s one of the cheapest ways to get exposure to this game. On a nine-game slate, you’re going to want as much as you can reasonably get. Russell has a wOBA over .340 the past two seasons against lefties and in limited time this year that number has jumped to .427. We’ve already mentioned Anderson is giving up a ton of flay balls and Russell is posting a wOBA that high without even making hard contact at a high rate so far. He’s a wonderful play this evening and just might be my shortstop of choice.

Also Consider – Tim Anderson, $3,100

Value

I can’t say this is a recommended path to take, but if you’re totally in love with the rest of your lineup and need a bare minimum punt option, Brandon Crawford at $2,000 makes a little bit of sense. He’s in the same boat as Joe Panik. I’m not looking to pick on Garrett Richards. He’s not hitting for any power but the average is higher against righty pitching. It’s hard not to find the money for Russell or another option.
