Gervonta “Tank” Davis stops Jesus Cuellar in Round 3

Gervonta “Tank” Davis fought Jesus Cuellar for the WBA super featherweight title. He answered his critics by destroying Cuellar with body punches.

Gervonta Davis is incredibly talented, but his focus and work ethic have come into question in the past. He failed to make weight in his last fight, but he was ready to go against Jesus Cuellar.

If Cuellar was intimidated, he didn’t show it in Round 1. He came out hot with aggression, but with one minute remaining in the round, he was on his back foot. Davis’s bodywork hurt Cuellar and gave him the round.

Davis continued his precision punching in Round 2 with intelligent counters to the body that hurt Cuellar. He landed a devastating left hand to Cuellar’s body that caused Cuellar to collapse to the canvas. Cuellar got up after a long count and he survived the round, but it was a clear 10-8 round for Davis.

Cuellar came out aggressively in Round 3 and took the center ring. It was a good first round for Cuellar, but he got countered with a hard uppercut that hurt him. With 46 seconds left in the round, Davis dropped Cuellar again with another flurry to the body.

Cuellar rose and began to fight, but the damage was done. Davis dropped him again with another flurry. Ultimately, it was Davis’s left uppercut that stopped Cuellar. The referee mercilessly stopped the fight.

This fight was never close. Davis stayed patient and countered Cuellar with accurate punches. They took their toll and Cuellar couldn’t handle Davis’s skills or power.

Davis lived up to the hype and delivered a result that will have boxing fans watching his fights in the future. His performance was emphatic and impressive.

Vasyl Lomachenko is seen as the best fighter in the super featherweight division, but Davis looked like a close second. His performance against Cuellar was stellar, and he made a lot of fans on this night.

A bout between Davis and Lomachenko will be in high demand. It’s too soon to tell if Davis is on Lomachenko’s level, but the buzz is sure to build.
