Benevento will officially be relegated to Serie B with a loss on Sunday against AC Milan. Even if Benevento win all five of their remaining games, it likely will not be enough to keep the club in Serie A. AC Milan are sixth in Serie A, holding off Atalanta, Sampdoria, and Fiorentina for the final European spot.
Milan was unable to hold onto the lead against Torino on Wednesday. The draw was Milan’s third in a row. Since Dec. 30, Milan have picked up 30 points in 15 games. Giacomo Bonaventura scored his sixth goal of the season on Wednesday. Patrick Cutrone is the only Milan player to score more goals than Bonaventura this season. Injuries are starting to pile up late in the season for Gennaro Gattuso. Hakan Calhanoglu, Andrea Conti, and Alessio Romagnoli are all expected to miss Sunday’s game.
It was always going to be tough for Benevento to stay in Serie A after their first promotion to the league in club history. Defensively, Benevento have allowed the most goals in Serie A, conceding 78 goals. Offensively, Benevento are slightly better, scoring 28 goals, the fourth fewest in Serie A. Cheick Diabate has scored 25 percent of Benevento’s goals, finding the back of the net seven times this season.
