5 managers the Cincinnati Reds can hire to fix their mess
2. Joe Girardi
After missing the playoffs completely in three of the previous four seasons, a 91-71 mark, a postseason series win and taking the Astros to seven games in the ALCS was not enough for the Yankees to keep Girardi as manager. General manager Brian Cashman pointed to the need for a fresh voice, and they got one for better or worse in Aaron Boone.
Girardi didn’t immediately land another managerial gig, and he has stepped into a role as an analyst for MLB Network while enjoying extra time with his family. But just prior to Price’s firing, coincidentally or not, he said he wants to manage again and would “approach it as opportunities come up.”
So if it wasn’t already obvious, Girardi has been named as a top candidate for the Reds.
Girardi has a World Series title (2009) and a Manager of the Year Award (2006, with the Marlins) on his résumé. The exits from both of his previous jobs have been weird and probably not all his fault, so Girardi should and surely will be in the mix for the job in Cincinnati.
