Catcher/First Base, High End Spend

Yasmani Grandal, $3,800

.333/.333/.667 with 0 HR in 3 at-bats

There are not the big names at the top of this position that we’re used to but Grandal is in a great spot tonight. Marlin’s starter Jarlin Garcia has a very limited track record and it’s actually not that bad. He’s done a fine job limiting hard contact and keeping the ball on the ground. However, he’s not striking many batters out. Grandal is on another level this season against lefties. He’s smashed them to the tune of a .421 average, 1.153 OPS and a .489 wOBA. Granted, it’s just 23 at-bats and he’s not going to keep it up to that level. He’s still absolutely a great option to spend up on at this spot tonight.

Mid-Range

Justin Bour, $3,200

N/A

Justin Bour gets to face one of the best prospects in baseball as Los Angeles Dodgers young gun Walker Buehler will make his first start. You never know what you’ll get when a rookie makes his first start, and it’s actually a bummer that Buehler isn’t in the player pool. He’d be worth a GPP dart throw. Anyways, Bour usually hits righty pitching very well. If Buehler doesn’t hit the ground running, Bour is one of the few bats in this lineup that could do some damage. His career ISO against righties is .232 and he’s got an .862 OPS to go with it. His strikeout rate is good too at under 20 percent so he’s got a good chance to put a ball into play.

Also Consider – Yuli Gurriel, $3,000

Value

Daniel Vogelbach, $2,600

N/A

I’m not sure how often Vogelbach is going to make an appearance in this column. He’s basically a poor man’s Joey Gallo — unlimited power with very limited contact skills. I can’t blame players for not using him in a cash game, but Vogelbach is in a great spot tonight. Opposing starter Miguel Gonzalez can’t get lefty batters out. They’re hitting .348 with a 1.249 OPS and a .517 wOBA against him. Vogelbach is hitting righties very well so far at a .300 average, .933 OPS and a .409 wOBA. Now, he is still striking out over 30 percent of the time so there is a ton of risk there. Something that could help mitigate the risk is Gonzalez has a strikeout rate of under five percent against lefties this season. This is tailor made for what Vogelbach does well.
