2018 NFL mock draft: Browns, Giants and Jets land quarterbacks
Should Darnold and Allen both be off the board, the New York Jets are going to have a very simple and yet difficult decision on their hands. General manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles know that should they mess this one up, both are going to be out the proverbial door before this time next year.
Baker Mayfield and Josh Rosen are both remaining on the board, an after trading three second-round picks — including one in2019 — to the Indianapolis Colts for the right to move up three spots, the Jets are absolutely going quarterback. In the end, Maccagnan elects to roll the dice and take Mayfield for a few reasons.
For starers, his tape was better than Rosen’s in 2018. Rosen might have the best arm talent in the class, but Mayfield played superior football throughout the season. Additionally, Mayfield worked his way up the chain at Oklahoma after transferring from Texas Tech and becoming a star of the Sooners as a walk-on.
The main concern here is whether Mayfield can keep himself on the right path. The youngster has already been the center of much controversy after being arrested in Arkansas for a litany of minor charges. The worry is that in New York, those issues only become magnified.
