There might not be a bigger rivalry between clubs in Champions League than Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. Wednesday’s first leg at the Allianz Arena will be the seventh time the two teams have faced each other in the semifinals and 25th game overall. While Bayern have won four of the previous six, Madrid knocked Bayern out of the Champions League last season in the quarterfinal.
Bayern Munich squeaked by Sevilla in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals for the seventh time since 2010-11. The Bavarian giants have lost only one game since the start of 2018. However, the club will have to overcome the loss of midfielder Arturo Vidal. The Chilean was forced to undergo season-ending surgery after aggravating an injury in the first leg against Sevilla. Jupp Heynckes has several options to replace Vidal. Recently, Heynckes has shifted Thomas Muller behind Robert Lewandowski and started Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben on the wing. However, Heynckes could also choose to start Thiago or Corentin Tolisso in place of Vidal.
Real Madrid advanced to the semifinals after Cristiano Ronaldo converted a late penalty against Juventus, ending the Italian club’s comeback. Zinedine Zidane’s side has gone unbeaten in their last seven La Liga games and will have a full week of rest ahead of Wednesday’s game. Real have gotten the best of Bayern recently, winning five straight games. Ronaldo has scored 42 goals this season, including 26 goals in 17 games in 2018. In six career games against Bayern, Ronaldo has scored nine goals and will be instrumental if Real are going to advance to their third straight Champions League Final.
