After months of hearing about Sam Darnold and Josh Allen, the Cleveland Browns pulled a fast one by selecting Baker Mayfield.
Get the trolling out of your system now, because the chances are very high that Browns fans are going to get the last laugh here. Baker Mayfield is a reality in Cleveland, and a future has been violently staked into the heart of the fandom.
It’s a fantastic pick for the Browns.
Mayfield gives the Browns something they haven’t had since the team came back to the NFL in 1999 — personality. Don’t discount that as something that isn’t “football related” because in Cleveland the only personlaity the fan base has had is one of losers.
There’s an instinctual need to want to make fun of the Browns, but it’s finally misguided (for now). Baker changes the Browns outlook instantly, giving them an instant culture change — perhaps some shock as well. He makes the team interesting from a standpoint of they’re not a laughing stock and finally have a chance to bounce back.
Simply drafting him doesn’t fix everything but it puts Cleveland in a situation where the pieces can start falling into place. Last year’s haul of Myles Garrett helped shore things up on the defensive side of the ball, and drafting Denzel Ward is only going to fortify that. Baker could be the final piece of the puzzle for the Browns.
