Somewhat unsurprisingly, Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has been sent off for yelling at the referee.

Ah yes, the fiery Diego Simeone has once again found himself relegated to the stands, this time for screaming at the referee during the first leg of his side’s Europa League semifinal against Arsenal.

This isn’t the first time the Argentine has been sent off, nor will it be the last. Unfortunately, his squad will be without his leadership for the rest of their match against Arsenal. Adjustments and substitutions are vital in close matches, and Atletico will be at a serious disadvantage in that regard.

The dismissal came after only 12 minutes, as Simeone responded to the sending off of Sime Vrsaljko for two yellow cards. The decision was maybe a little harsh, but Vrsaljko made contact with Alexandre Lacazatte and went into the challenge more rashly than a player on a booking should have.

Atletico responded to the set-back relatively well, holding out Arsenal for the remainder of the first half, and generating a few decent chances of their own, with Antoine Griezmann forcing a couple of decent saves out of David Ospina.

But Arsenal’s numerical advantage proved decisive in the second half, as Lacazette finally headed Arsenal into the lead on the hour mark. The goal was deserved on the balance of play, as Atleti sat deeper and deeper in an effort to keep a clean sheet.

If there’s anything a Simeone side excels at, it’s frustrating opponents. The Argentine manager has built one of the most well-drilled defensive sides in Europe, and the, um, intensity he showed to get himself sent off usually translates to his team.

There is, however, such a thing as going too far, as Simeone found out the hard way.
