4. Philadelphia Eagles trade out of Round 1
The defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles are in the draft’s most envious spot — without any glaring holes to fill, the Eagles’ picks this year are luxuries and depth-fillers. That being the case, it doesn’t make much of a difference whether the Eagles make their first selection at No. 32 overall or No. 40 overall, and it would be wise of them to trade back and gather more capital.
Now, the Eagles might have some players circled on their draft board who could still be available at No. 32. The ones that come to mind are running back Sony Michel, tight end Dallas Goedert and cornerbacks Mike Hughes and Jaire Alexander. Trading out of the first round would almost certainly mean the Eagles would miss out on those players — unless they’re trading with the Cleveland Browns at No. 33 or the New York Giants at No. 34, for some reason.
Still, the fact that the mock drafts have the Eagles all over the place at No. 32 is precisely why they should trade back. Because they’re not in desperate need of any one position, they can comfortably select the best available player at whatever their first pick happens to be.
