3. The New Orleans Saints draft a tight end at No. 27
The Saints are, typically, a “best available player” team in the NFL draft, rather than a team that drafts blindly for need.
That being said, it’s highly likely this year that one of the best players on the board for the Saints when their first-round selection at No. 27 rolls around could also fit one of their biggest needs. There’s no question that the Saints offense has been desperately missing an impact tight end since Jimmy Graham was traded to the Seattle Seahawks in 2015. In fact, the Saints are in such need of help at the position that this offseason they went out and signed 37-year-old Benjamin Watson, previously of the Baltimore Ravens.
There were reports that the Saints were interested in a reunion with Graham this offseason, but he signed with the Green Bay Packers. Drew Brees deserves a real chance to go after one final Super Bowl ring before he rides into the sunset, and the Saints are so close, especially with their two-headed monster in the backfield of Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram. An impact tight end would push them over the edge.
