The Vegas Golden Knights take on the San Jose Sharks in Game 1 of the semifinals series in Round 2 of the NHL playoffs. Here is a prediction for Game 1.

The Pacific Final between the Vegas Golden Knights and San Jose Sharks looks to be a fun matchup between division rivals. There is a lot to look forward to in this matchup. On paper, the Golden Knights may be favored. But the Sharks should not be taken lightly.

The Golden Knights swept the Los Angeles Kings in Round 1. They did it in convincing fashion and exceeded expectations for a inaugural team. They have a good team with plenty of talent and depth. The Sharks are also coming off a series sweep of the Anaheim Ducks.

San Jose is going to have to defend Vegas’s top line, because it can be a challenge for any team. The top line is composed of William Karlsson , Reilly Smith and Jonathan Marchessavit; combined, they have 14 goals in the postseason alone. The Sharks top line is nothing to sniff at, either, but Vegas has serious scoring firepower.

Expect Vegas to be relentless when it has an advantage. The Sharks are not as relentless, but they will take advantage of any mistakes. When comes to special teams, the Sharks have an edge. They did a good job on power plays against the Ducks, with 30.0 percent. Also, their power play kill unit is effective. Vegas is going to have to defend against San Jose’s special teams because that could be big in Game 1.

Both teams are even in most categories, so all in all this will be an entertaining game and start to the series.

Game 1 Prediction: Golden Knights defeat Sharks 3-2.
